Marc lives and works between Douala and Nkongsamba. Rendering constellations of bodies in conversation, Padeu’s works are drawn from the artist’s daily life and evoke a tension between the quotidian and monumental. The colours and compositions of his paintings weave together palpable affective realms, which address themes of history, memory and spirituality. Drawing on centuries of experimentation with figuration, Padeu incorporates references to the art historical canon of the Old Masters.
In doing so, he works from multiple temporal registers to invoke the intimacy of European and African histories and their present implications.
